“A Story In 3”
This triptych piece embodies the spirit and tale of the continent of Africa. From left to right, it tells you the story of the beginnings of Africa to the sad fate that still impacts the continent today. From the left, it begins with Africa being the embodiment of humanity, as it is where all people descended from and the nature of the regions which birthed modern humans. To the center, it focuses on the cultural influence of Africa and displays artwork, clothing, and those who are from there. To the right, shows Africa’s sad fate due to the colonial power of Europe, as they were influenced by the teachings of Christ to expand and conquer in the name of their religious beliefs, thus resulting in the slave trade and current effect of Africa today.
Inspired by the works of African artists such as dineo seshee bopape, yinka shonibare, otobong nkanga, and romauld hazoume, I was able to use their works to recreate a new piece that shows the story of Africa. Done with magazine papers, fabric, wood, plants, beads, and other accessories. Thus resulting into a narrative textile collage piece which evokes the spirit of Pan Africanism, while educating and guiding the viewer into the story of the legendary continent of Africa.
